More information
Gambling related harm is something that has gone unnoticed and under the radar for many years. It is an issue that is rarely considered and included within needs assessments, but is a hidden addiction that is becoming increasingly prevalent and is now being considered a public health issue in Wales with funds being made available through Welsh Government from April 2026. Current research indicates that 30000 people experience significant levels of harm in Wales from gambling harms with a further 80000 in the at risk/ low risk category.
Ara have been providing gambling support across Wales and the South West for over 10 years and have been the nationally recognised provider to Wales since 2019 as part of the National Gambling Support Network. We deliver a variety of interventions from structured therapy such as CBT, to early intervention/ prevention community work including education to professionals and educational settings as well as continuous interventions/ aftercare online peer support.
Our focus is to work within local systems, and we have highlighted Newport & Gwent as one of our focus areas for the coming months and are currently in the process of developing cross sector connections. Equally recent figures have shown an increase in the number of Women across Wales accessing Gamstop as a preventative tool for gambling online.
